A classic detective thriller, Quai des Orfevres centres on the efforts of the Maigret-esque Inspector Antoine (Louis Jouvet) and his investigation into the murder of an elderly businessman.
Antoine suspects the involvement of aspiring music hall artiste Jenny Lamour (Suzy Delair) and her jealous husband Maurice (Bernard Blier). It emerges that, in the hope that he would further her career, Lamour paid a visit to the victim on the night he died, putting the couple's struggling marriage under further pressure. Set against a series of seedy Parisian backdrops, Quai des Orfevres sees Clouzot offering unusually sympathetic characterisation, without ever letting up the narrative pace.
