Fritz Lang's dark masterpiece 'M' is the story of a child-killer, played impeccably by the chillingly psychopathic, mournful and child-like figure of Peter Lorre, who stalks the desolate streets of 1920s Dusseldorf. Based on the real-life child murderer Peter Kurten, 'The Monster of Dusseldorf, M' is forcible portrayal of both a killer and the fear and hysteria that his presence creates. Lang's mob of angry citizens is in many ways as frightening and as threatening as the killer, perhaps more so in that 'M' was made against the rise of Nazis Germany and the ever brutal presence of the SA whose stormtrooper thugs were, at this time, virtually out of control. For all these reasons and more 'M' is a must see film.
