In the early thirties Christopher Isherwood (Laurence Harvey) is a young aspiring writer living in pre-world World War II Berlin. Christopher meets the vivacious, penniless singer Sally Bowles (Julie Harris) a young English woman who is performing in a cabaret and they soon develop a platonic relationship. Then Sally meets wealthy American Clive (Ron Randell) at a party who helps Sally and Christopher financially and socially and for a while, they have the time of their lives as Sally enjoys spending other people's money. Things begin to change, however, as the increasing power of Nazism in the country affects their lives, and threatens Christopher's Jewish friend, Fritz (Anton Diffring).
