A Common Thread is an exquisite debut film by director and co-writer Eleonore Faucher. It is the unsuspecting story of two women and the art of embroidery - it is also about friendship across generations and overcoming sorrow and adversity through a common bond.
Claire, played by fiery newcomer Lola Naymark, and Mme Melikian, played by Robert Guediguian regular and wife Ariane Ascaride, work together in silence, but have a profound effect on each other. When head strong, 17 year old Claire discovers she is pregnant, she decides to keep it a secret and give birth anonymously. She also abandons her dead-end job at a local supermarket and pursues her passion for embroidery by apprenticing with a Christian Lacriox couturier.
The revered seamstress takes on Claire to help her with her work, but also as a companion to help ease the pain she is suffering from the recent death of her son.
