Margaret is recovering in hospital and Michael is spending time at the Ashtons. Sheila and David are growing apart and their son Peter is heartbroken by his father's coldness.
Hope Against Hope Margaret is found after an air raid and taken to the hospital. Sheila meets Mrs Porter on a train on her way to visit. Michael talks passionately to Edwin about the war and pacifism.
A Time to be Born Margaret is in hospital and Mrs Porter pays an awkward visit unaware of Margaret's pregnancy. Sheila is desperate to keep her family together and not lose David.
A Hero's Welcome Peter is excited about his father's return but his hopes of a happy visit are dashed when David is sharp and critical with him then goes early on Christmas Day leaving everyone miserable.
We Could be a Lot Worse Off David has grown apart from Sheila and feels she is holding him back. Sheila feels alone and dejected. Robert's ship is torpedoed and Michael is spending a lot of time with the Ashtons.
Lend Your Loving Arms Freda is slowly falling for Michael. David returns home again and has words with Michael about his pacifist views. Freda receives a telegram with bad news.
Hazard Phillip Ashton is in the Western Desert serving with the Infantry. After initial dislike and distrust towards a new comrade he changes his mind when that same comrade saves them from lethal landmines in No Man's Land.
